Job Description

The Post and Courier in Charleston, SC seeks a Newspaper page designer for both online and print editions for its daily, weekly and monthly publications.

Duties and responsibilities

Page layout and design:

• Create and produce visually compelling page layouts for daily and weekly online and print editions using design software such as Adobe InDesign.
• Ensure that all layouts conform to the newspaper's established brand and style.
• Regularly communicate with editors and writers regarding story placement, layout, and visual presentation.
• Prepare print-ready files, managing color profiles, resolution, and other technical aspects for quality output.
• Review and proof designs to check for errors in layout, typography, and image placement.
• Communicate with pre-press and printing departments to resolve any production issues.
• Work closely with writers, editors, photographers, and other design team members to coordinate projects.
• Manage multiple design projects simultaneously while adhering to strict and tight deadlines.
• Stay flexible and be ready to make last-minute adjustments for breaking news stories.

Qualifications:

• Exceptional design skills and news judgment
• Ability to meet deadlines with accuracy
• Strong interpersonal and excellent grammar and language skills
• Experience working with Adobe InDesign and knowledge of AP style
• Familiarity with Adobe Photoshop and BLOX CMS a plus
• Bachelor's degree in graphic design and/or journalism or comparable experience

Physical Requirements:

• Close eye work, continuous sitting, constant walking, standing, light to moderate lifting 15-30 pounds (per safety policy).
